East Northamptonshire Community Energy Switching scheme?

Have you been following media reports about Community Energy Switching? Basically this is the bulk-buying of gas and electricity by interested groups or better still whole communities, keen to save household energy costs. Community Energy Switching began in Holland and Belguim where it is increasingly popular and interest is now spreading to England. During a recent interview a Belguim family said that since joining their community energy switching scheme their gas and electricity costs had reduced by about 200 a month.

South Lakeland Council quickly appreciated Community Energy Switching as a way to help reduce the their residents energy bills. Interestingly, minimising lakeland dwellers living costs was something that they also felt was an important part of their social responsibilty.

How does it work? Unless I am mistaken something like this. Residents keen to save money are invited to 'register' and this enables a total community energy requirement to be established. Once known, this energy need is then 'auctioned' to interested energy suppliers. Presumabely the 'lowest bidder' who can offer stable supplies with lowest tariffs wins this type of auction. The lesser known small but award-winning, OVO Energy company has won South Lakeland Council's first contract.

Community Energy Switching has another huge advantage for consumers. It removes the time-wasting and constant confusion of finding, comparing and changing to better value suppliers. Local authorities are well placed to adopt and promote Community Energy Switching. An area like East Northamptonshire seems a good base. Should the ENDC or NCC provide a Community Energy Switching scheme? If they did would you join?

I'd certainly be very interested.

Is this something that ENC has to organise or is there some other umbrella organisation?
